Album Review - “AUTOBOPS: Kartunes of Self Love & Loathe” by Kris Lamarr

On his studio album,  “AUTOBOPS: Kartunes of Self Love & Loathe” Kris Lamarr is more surfaced and vibe-heavy with his presentation. Lamarr creates music that relies on the Detroit rapper’s artful intuitions, entrusting a palette layered by the multitude of producer’s directions and simply coasting on what he likes and what he doesn’t. In the end, Lamarr creates a bouquet of tracks, resulting in a pleasant surprise of an album.

This album, if nothing else, embraces Detroit’s greatest attributes, with one of its highlights being confidence, which Lamarr displays in spades. If the sound is the taste of a restaurant’s cuisine, then confidence is the matching ambiance, equally important to an album’s sonic success. Lamarr embraces each line with an approach reminiscent of unscathed wisdom.

While the album revolves around a lifestyle of self-loathing, dreaming of having the finest cars, and willing luxury dreams into fruition, Lamarr approaches each topic as if it’s recent history mixed with a prideful sense of optimism. Tracks such as “Keep Up.” showcase Lamarr rapping, “Bet I whip this hoopty like a foreign, Warping down the lodge woods burning” He’s an artist in the truest sense, one dedicated to sharing his experiences with the world, nothing more, nothing less.

Production-wise, this album is the perfect compliment to Lamarr’s rhymes. With a majority of the production coming from standout producers Derrick Shorter and Cjay Hill, the album seamlessly flows between the smooth and easygoing sounds of “Keep Up” to the rugged-confidence of “Detroit Dash. Production is a steady highlight, which guides Lamarr in the album’s pacing.

Overall “AUTOBOPS: Kartunes of Self Love & Loathe” is worth the listen, and might become a summer favorite for those willing to give it a shot. You can listen to the album here.
