Album Review - “I Feel Different Every Day (Delux)” by ChlotheGod
ChlotheGod musically is simultaneously a musical throwback to unfiltered emotional strength and a flash-forward with melodic creativity, willing to borrow elements from multiple genres to get her point across. On her latest project, I Feel Different Every Day, ChlotheGod provides songs that explore the less-than-desired aspects of relationships. What concludes is a mountain of musical magic led by a vocalist who naturally weaves talent with intrusive-thoughtful storytelling.
For an album about addressing shortcomings, whether through personal goals, life relationships, or family, it does so in ways that feel relatable and more aligned with diary entries rather than cool songs taped for radio singles. However, in execution, it functions with the potential of both, with a handful of catchy earworms that help the album flow while being progressive and not too in-the-know, where it leaves the viewer behind.
Regarding songs, ChlotheGod, despite the catchiness, refuses to romanticize a single aspect of her truth, which creates the best elements of the thematic beauty. Songs like "Why Would I" tackle the emotional loss of dealing with a former partner that pushes you to emotional distance, or “I Swear,” where a fed-up ChlotheGod details the ramifications of getting on the bad side of her romantic wrath. ChlotheGod, however, navigates between a modernized R&B and a peaceful pace. Her sound still glows of personal truth and diary-esque intimacy.
Production-wise, it would not be too far of a stretch to describe this album as a masterful fusion of folk, R&B, and pop, with rock elements layered at the most opportune times. Without diving deep into the technicalities of its mixing, first-time listeners will enjoy the range of sounds, which does everything in its power to avoid the idea of being pigeonholed into a genre, making songs like “What’s So Funny” sound vastly different than tracks like “Sorry to Cancel” without any song being a filler or out-of-element.
Blessed by her jazzy-rock vocals and natural storytelling talent, ChlotheGod creates a project measured by her truth. While the listener gravitates towards her talking points, the album, instrumentally, wears multiple influences on its sleeve and finds the singer at the center holding court with lyrics that are near confessionals. Overall, for I Feel Different Every Day, throughout this project, while the quality of talent is in spades, the value is in its relatability.
