Album Review- Liberated Scarfaces by Dskillz Harris & Black Chakra
Liberated Scarfaces by Dskillz Harris & Black Chakra is an old-school hip-hop dream. From traditional boom-bap beats to an unrelenting lyrical onslaught, if you’re a fan of the old-school style of lyrics-first mentality brand of hip-hop, then you’ll find this tape to be one of your favorite projects this year.
Consisting of 13 tracks, the members of Maryland’s Down By Law(DBL) find themselves at the forefront of this lyrical sparring session. This album thrives by providing consistent yet extremely entertaining bars that feature enough pop-culture references that you’ll remain ecstatic to hear the next ear-catching line.
This album accomplishes the task of making competent tracks while remaining lyrically dense. Anyone that has heard overly-lyrical albums in the past will tell you that this is not an easy task.
One of the best aspects of this album is their plethora of features, including artist Trai Blessed, who makes his presence well known on “Makin Money Like Mitch”.
In terms of production, while typical of the boom-bap era, nothing truly stands out. However, it never takes away from the overall experience of the album. If you put this album on, you should expect great lyrics, with a playfully written song structure reminiscent of high school lunchtime ciphers.
This album is worth the listen, and the quality of bars is worth the price of admission alone. You can listen to the album here.
