Song Review - "Sponge" by Kit Major

"Sponge" by Kit Major is a throwback song from the early 2000s in the best ways. Defined by its heavy, unrelenting, if not defiant, guitar riffs, this relatively short track shines by making each moment either thump, hum, bang, or crash with immense purpose. It's punk with flair, and we, the listeners, should appreciate that.

Listeners begin the song with a treat to the central focus of the blaring guitar. The intensity of this instrument is front and center, only matched by its matching drums that find ways to make snares reach a strength that few songs attempt in 2024. Despite its prowess, the drums accomplish everything except overpower or become distracting to the overall experience. It's a beautiful mixture.

However, what is the song actually about?

After hearing it multiple times, I've concluded that it's about the pressure of dealing with a narcissist or a narcissistic entity in some way, or it's about its surface message of simply being so utterly infatuated with someone that you would want nothing more than your independence to a semblance of their ideologies. Either way, the simplicity of the lyrics is a fun quality of the song's performance.

Lyrically, the song does not have to be dense. It's monotone in a way that gets the point across that Kit is dealing with the draining, if not soul-sapping, experience that comes with a near-one-sided relationship, and perhaps the lack of lyrics is the most defining or accurate trait of the song itself.

Overall, "Sponge" is 2024 alternative. If not a benchmark of what the genre sound should be, it's a fun reminder of what it could be. You can check out the song here.
