Album Review- “InTheDazeOf: Audio Depiction” by Beretta Shells

InTheDazeOf: AudioDepiction by Beretta Shells is a testament to the power of audio curation when done correctly. When producers provide mock attempts at artistry, they’re often a step slower, and the random assortment of artists can see the album displaying a weird form of impostor’s syndrome. For InTheDazeOf: AudioDepiction, Beretta Shells crafts an imposing project worthy of your attention.

For much of the album, Beretta Shells takes the helm as a triple-threat producing, rapping, and DJ-ing throughout the album. When Shells shows his producing ability, he offers directions that are grooving with a knack to become unpredictable while remaining true to the thematic feel of the album.

When Shells puts on his rapper hat, he becomes a Cam’ron-esk emcee. His raps are often vocally-bored, dedicated to proving his rhymes while ignoring the verbal theatrics and expressive showboating of hip-hop normalities. If you take the time to pick apart his raps, you’ll find a method to his smooth-lackadaisical style. His rhyming pattern seemingly mimics a Tetris puzzle, where his lines feel off-the-cuff but appropriately fitting once they’re finished.

Alongside Shells’ rhyming ability are a small host of features, each of which brings a different element of cool factor to their respective song. Additionally, each artist manages to fit within the world that Shells created. No feature feels out of place, but each guest verse feels interchangeable. This situation is particularly for featuring artists Yoda.Kai.Vibes, and Kazzy The Gypsy, who each feature on two songs through the 15-song project.

Overall you’ll find this album pleasantly smooth, occasionally bar-heavy, and a proper introduction for a talented artist in possession of untold range. You can listen to the album here.
