Single Review - “Be U” by Lex The Radical

Lex The Radical is an interesting concept as a rapper, not that his lyrics reinvent the wheel, but as an emcee, he's a throwback to realism in hip-hop. A concept that should have never gone out of style, but found itself priced or gentrified out of the genre for a number of reasons. However, for Lex (or last name Radical) his ideas of a great song are rooted in truth and hopes. This is evident in his new song "Be U," where Lex addresses the concept of inauthenticity in life or the freedom of simply being yourself.

What makes “Be U” standout is Lex's daring swagger, where he doesn't advise you to "Be u" but demands that you see the ray of sunshine that comes with being the most authentic version of yourself. Lex, in his impressive rapping-bag, takes the simple concept of truth and manipulates interesting lyrical angles to remix the tried-and-true concept for another spin that’s interesting and too skillful to be deemed preachy.

Another aspect that makes "Be U" standout is its 3 a.m. feeling. Where the song doesn't necessarily need to be played at night, but there's an undoubted after-the-club-hanging-with-friends energy to his verbiage. Where lyrics like "acceptance less effective than respect," are spoken with earnest intent.

Production-wise, Lex is on a tear with another production masterclass. He uses the track as a tool rather than letting it guide him, something most rappers tend to do. Whether the dark aesthetic of the track or his ability to create an atmosphere on his own terms, Lex is in complete control of “Be U,” and we, the viewers, get to enjoy the experience.
