Artist Interview - DJ N01y0uknow
I had the privilege of interviewing DJ N01y0uknow. During this interview, we discussed his artist roots, his 2022 plans, and his musical influences. The Detroit native always provided great energy-inspiring quotes. The interview is below.
Ayesharp- So it’s pretty great to speak with you, this is our second interview I believe. So to begin our interview, I want to give fans a solid introduction to your style, you’re both, a DJ and a producer. So who are some of your musical influences?
DJ N01y0uknow- A lot more these days. Kilo Kish, Matt Martians, Mitski, Monte Booker, Chad Hugo, and Radiohead. I like a lot of their lyrics and sound design.
Ayesharp - Does that influence your DJ style?
DJ N01y0uknow - Oh yeah! A lot of people don't know that the lead singer from Radiohead is a DJ, and he got some heat! Him and Monte Booker really influence my song selection, and transition styles when I DJ.
DJ N01y0uknow- I wanna say 2015-16? I was interning at Quicken Loans with DJ Holographic, and they let me help with a couple of their DJ sets, and I fell in love with it. So after that, they taught me some things and I ended up getting my own equipment so I could practice on my own. Maybe 2014, but yeah, seeing them spin records and going to see like TOKiMONSTA live made me really want to dj because the shows were so cool, and people were engaged with hearing their beats live.
Ayesharp- That's pretty cool, so you've become both, a DJ and a producer. You've released a few projects. What are your plans for the 2022 year?
DJ N01y0uknow- Yeah! I'm shooting to release a couple projects in the summer, a collab EP, a solo EP and self produced album. I wanted to do all this last year but money and the pandemic but now I think its time. A lot of my homies have been putting out heat and I can't fall behind.
Ayesharp- Awesome. Typically how long does it take you to create an entire project? What does it typically depend on?
DJ N01y0uknow- Maybe a couple months, like four or five tops. Usually depends on life, what I learn, and what I'm listening to at the time. I try to like, live and have experiences before I start on a new project I usually take a few months to learn something new about Ableton, and how someone made their album and I start taking inspiration from there.
Ayesharp- I don’t believe I’ve ever asked this. What you you classify your primary genre as?
DJ N01y0uknow- Experimental hip hop with some elements of house music and UK garage. Not scaring the baddies experimental music (laughs)
Ayesharp- (Laughs) Enough experimental to not scare the baddies, but keep them interested enough to stick around?
DJ N01y0uknow- Yeah (laughs) you could play some of the new stuff I'm making in the club.
Ayesharp- Nice, I can't wait to hear. And last question, is there anything you want to say to any viewer reading this interview?
DJ N01y0uknow- Cool, viewers need to read more of your reviews and interviews. You got my favorite articles out right now.
Ayesharp- Thank you very much. Can’t wait to hear what’s next.
