Album Review- “No Cap” by Pepp aka Mr. Attention
Artist Pepp is neither a poet who allows his lyrics to have room for interpretations nor is he a rapper that’ll blitz you with rhyming speed a la Twista. Instead, Pepp is a straightforward poet who possesses otherworldly charisma. During his latest project “No Cap” the veteran emcee bares authentic verses over dazzling production. “No Cap” in the end, is more than a series of authentic stories. Pepp takes each bar as his pride, genuine history, and the ways he’s embraced and defied it, this is the theme of “No Cap.”
For much of the album’s progress, Pepp raps from the perspective of a man preaching hard-earned wisdom. In songs such as “Don’t Test Me.” Mr. Attention preaches, “These streets for the real. You either going to jail or getting killed.” The direct voice of these rhymes highlights the gravity of the message. Throughout this album, for better or worse, you can hear the impact of the imparted wisdom through the years on his voice.
While the album is short, running just under 20-minutes, the songs are impactful during their brief stints. Whether it's a hustling anthem or a lengthy 4-minute freestyle session, which doubles as a rhythmic venting session, Pepp knows when to get in and get out without running the risk of unnecessary rambling or bar-vomiting, which rappers are prone to doing.
For those unfamiliar with Pepp, AKA Mr. Attention, this album would serve as a great introduction to his signature style and his habit of showmanship. With most songs lasting under 2-minutes, Pepp brings enough brash-street charm and a no-nonsense rap attitude to create a good project for anyone looking for a new sound to enjoy.
