Song Review - Odyssey by MADD KEYS and Dope Sean

“Odyssey” by MADD KEYS and Dope Sean is a hip-hop psychedelic that features thumping drums, relaxing lyrics, and soothing energy.

High-talk or weed rap is always an interesting concept because, by definition of music, the genre captures the essence of a singular moment. In the same light that rock captures the electric spark of rebellion, weed rap captures the moment of being under the euphoric influence.

This is much of the case for “Odyssey” by MADD KEYS and Dope Sean, who, for the majority of this song, takes you on a special easy-going trip asking to get high with them, ride with them and go on an odyssey.

For Odyssey, the song tackles the task of taking a genre and finding a way to create a different light to paint the green picture. Odyssey works because it attacks your mood and makes you see things from their level. So whether you are high, smoking, or no longer high, the content and tempo bring you to a smoker’s session for no extra charge.

For first-time listeners of MADD Keys, this introduction is inherently infectious for many reasons. You would be surprised to find the song equally catchy as it is an insight into the psyche of the modern-day laid-back everyman. There isn’t a dire sense of urgency but a placid, skillfully executed soundtrack to simply wanting to smoke with someone.

In addition to the verbal beauty is the message-complicit production, which is sheeny smooth, finding a way to offer hard-hitting drums without sacrificing the innate lul of this song's talking points. Firmly equipped with a melody that manages to find a way to be progressive without overpowering the already overpowered drums and keeps a steady, hypnotizing tone without being mundane.

It’s a common recipe for the genre that avoids the need for change because it works.

Overall MADD KEYS and Dope Sean piece together a fun track that allows you to sit on the couch, relax with someone, and go on an odyssey. You can listen to the song here.
