Review - “WHAT?” by Throwaway

I remember the first time I saw Throwaway perform. A powerful duo with a sole goal to "punch the audience in the face as hard as we can." Their performance was erratic, complex, perfected and nothing I've ever seen before.

Their debut album, "WHAT?" If nothing else sustains and emboldens the run of tremendous form. Creating one of the more impressive bodies of work I've heard this year.

For those unfamiliar with the band, the group describes itself as "An Avant-rock phenomenon designed to melt your ears, minds, and hearts, fry them on ka-bobs over the bonfire, and feed them back to you

For most of its duration, "WHAT?" accomplishes its goal to "melt your ears." Undoubtedly thrilling and explosive, with a sense of outburst and danger at every turn. It's music that refuses to take its Ritalin medication.

Led by singer Kirsten Carey, along with drummer Oliver Dobrian, the paper-bagged shenom commands the listener's attention. Taking a "What you see is what you get" approach, lyrically the album remains impressive by its raw emotion and honesty.

This is evident by the opening track "Bonathan Jyers." Where lyrics of "I don't buy it!" are militantly sung. "WHAT?" also captures the identity of Throwaway by remaining ever-changing though it's pacing. As several times throughout the album, a track will change its tempo several times before reaching its conclusion.

"WHAT?" Is fast, frenetic, organically chaotic, and very loud. Carey at the helm preaches messages of defiance, while helping organize a project of work that rivals any body of work released this year. If you haven't heard this project, links can be found below.
