Song Review - “The Upgrade” by Jovie

Jovie, as an artist, is one of Detroit’s not-so-best-kept-secret. He’s an industry veteran with world-class skill and the discography to back it up. From singles like “Early Worm.” to underrated projects like “Bruce Leeroy.” His skill set is matured from God-given talent and the classic Detroit ambition.

On The Upgrade, Jovie returns as an emcee possessing one of the deadliest pen games in the rap industry. A one-verse warning shot that unfortunately, didn’t miss. Jovie takes the time and speaks fluidly with bars that are as thoughtful and tightly knit as ever, but now Jovie is clear and more confident, approaching his next challenge with veteran foresight.

“They tryna downplay the upgrade/ like they don’t see the difference since we parted ways/ It was all a phase/ it took a minute, but I grew from it/ learn back when, I really knew nothin.”

One of Jovie’s best qualities is his ability to never fatigue as an emcee. His verses remain strong throughout their stay, and The Upgrade is no different. Jovie blitzes the soulful instrumental with his composed lyrical brigade and maintains this pace of top-tier artistry that never wavers its commitment to keeping your attention.

For fans of Jovie, this is a good sign to know he’s back in the studio and creating new material. For non-fans of Jovie, I highly recommend checking out the song here.
