Review - FKA Twigs “Lp1”

LP1 breaks all the rules of R&B or pop music, becoming something more evolved. It’s experimental but arranged without flaw, displaying the formula for creating a successful debut album. FKA Twigs creates a necessary mystique with her album, showing skill and ear-catching substance with each song.

Structurally, LP1 takes the standard format of your prototypical singer and shifts the paradigm substantially. Where there would be a chart-topping radio hit, instead are songs like "Two Weeks" Where Twigs soprano her way through a sexually charged musical experience. Where you’ll look for a soulful ballad, you will find songs like “Video” where Twigs recounts her experiences as a background dancer. Twigs somehow create everything incorrectly, correctly.

Lyrically, Twigs is far from a virtuoso, however, she thrives by being able to create imaginatively appealing lyrics and deliver each line in such a way that it becomes artistically alluring. As lyrics such as "Smoke on your skin to get those pretty eyes rolling/ My thighs are apart for when you're ready to breathe in.” Are delivered in such a way that it feels visually stunning despite being purely imaginative.

FKA Twigs throughout this album displays impressive range through her subject matter and equally important, through her production. Twigs production shows peak performance in songs such as “Hours.” Where Twigs details her favorite methods of body exploration over a stripped-down beat. While on paper, this may seem minimalistic, in execution, this enhances the song filling it to the brim with vibrant soundscapes that become structurally appealing.

Overall, this album is a classic debut from one of music’s biggest names currently. Although released more than five years ago, this album remains a go-to for anyone looking to get their experimental music fix from someone with a unique, but talented sound.
