Album Review- Roadman The Wizard “The Flood.”
The Flood by Roadman The Wizard is a project that could take you by surprise if you’re anticipating the talents of a belting singer or the signature bravado of that rapper. Instead, what concludes is a five-song beat-tape not equipped to handle the on-demand freestyles of your favorite rapper. It is a project designed to project an aura of day-party kickbacks alongside your favorite friends. The tape itself, running just above 12 minutes in content, this project is a sample-filled sound experiment, which shows Roadman putting forth his best producing expertise in hopes of crafting a good project.
For those unfamiliar with Roadman the Wizard, this project has the potential to serve as an opportunity to introduce him as having a signature style or trademark sound. However, due to the infrequent sound and brief length of the project, this project fails at establishing familiarity with Roadman as a music creator.
An example of this sporadic nature is the opening song “Saulwave.” A four-minute, ear-soother of a beat. The track itself, backed by idle background conversation. While little pleasantries float in-and-out during the song, you’ll find yourself questioning the track's overall direction, but appreciating the cleverness of the overall sound.
Moments like this occur during each of the five songs. Creating a highlight for a tape that one would think is too short for highlights. However, this project accomplishes a feat of being a reminder that music doesn’t have to be an end-objective for an artist outside of itself—it can, instead, be a means to relaxation, freeing the listener and the project for other endeavors.
With only five songs in total, it’s a good listen for one who wants to listen to a beat-tape without the burden of a necessary objective. You can listen here.
